Crime Details:A New Jersey man is in jail on assault charges after police say he picked up a State College police officer and slammed him to the ground, sending him to the hospital after authorities responded to reports the man was beating several people. Police are now enlisting the help of the public to find anyone else who may have been attacked around 12:30 a.m. Saturday on the 300 block of West Highland Alley. Police were called to the scene after getting a report that a man was assaulting several other men. When uniformed officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Mark J. Sargenti “hopping around in the street shirtless and acting very aggressive,” Detective John Aston wrote in a press release. Officers tried to confront him, but had to use pepper spray to subdue Sargenti, police said. After he settled down, Sargenti turned and tackled an officer, lifting him off the ground before slamming him down, police said. “After a substantial struggle by another police officer present and a citizen who was requested by the officer to help him, (Sargenti) was handcuffed and arrested,” Aston wrote. The assaulted police officer had minor back and leg injuries and was treated and released from Mount Nittany Medical Center. Police say before the attack on police, Sargenti had assaulted a Penn State student, who reported he was attacked unprovoked and punched repeatedly in the head by Sargenti. “Based on witness accounts, it is believed there may have been other persons assaulted by the defendant at or around the same location and time,” Aston wrote. Anyone with information is asked to call State College police at 234-7150, or the Centre County Crimestoppers at 877-992-7463. Anonymous tips can be submitted to the State College police Web site at www.statecollegepa.us. Sargenti was taken to the county jail awaiting arraignment Saturday.
