Crime Time:early Monday morning
Crime Type:Vandalism
Crime Location:Sheriff’s Office
Victim Auth:No
Crime Details:Vandals broke the windows on two Centre County vehicles and ripped a security camera off a county building this weekend, marking the third time the Sheriff’s Office van has been vandalized since October. The vandalism happened early Monday morning outside the Sheriff’s Office, 213 E. High St., Bellefonte. Centre County Administrator Tim Boyde said almost every window in the county Probation Office’s Dodge sedan was broken and the side mirrors were ripped off the badly damaged car. A long side window on the Sheriff’s Office van was also broken, the headlights were smashed and a security camera was ripped off the Sheriff’s Office building. Bellefonte Police Chief Shawn Weaver said his department will be examining the video surveillance tapes and trying to find a witness who is described as a white man with a stocky build. “It’s the first time we actually got good video and a witness,” Weaver said. Centre County Sheriff Denny Nau said the vandal also threw rocks at the windows of his office building, but the thick glass there didn’t break. Nau’s office has been borrowing a van from the county prison while his vehicle is repaired. The county has a $2,500 deductible on its insurance that it will have to cover. “We will exceed that because of the level of damage,” said Deborah McHugh, risk management coordinator. In October, vandals painted graffiti on the county courthouse and spray-painted the Sheriff’s Office van. Then in December, the van was damaged by a chemical used to strip the paint off of it and the windshield was smashed. No one has been arrested in the first two incidents. A total of $6,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the two initial incidents of vandalism is still available. Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call Centre County Crimestoppers at 877-99-CRIME.
